Back in the Classroom

It was wonderful to have a full classroom this week! Kids seemed ready to be back at school, see their classmates and teachers, and dive into the familiar activities and routines that school offers. Here’s a peek of what that first day back looked like:

We hadn’t played with dough since early in the school year. Kids enjoyed getting their hands on it again and using different kinds of tools for cutting and pressing.

There were some new toys to play with (magnetic mix and match animals) and some new ideas to share (making of a map with roads and houses) at school.

Even though we’d been away from school for a week, kids didn’t need much reminding to hang up the smocks once they were done with them or to put their artwork in their cubbies, so they could take it home at the end of the day.

We counted the 10 red dot days we had been away from school and looked forward to the green dot days ahead.

At gym time kids were interested in hiding behind the soft blocks.

After doing some hiding, some kids wanted to help make the hiding places.

Other gym activities: running, chasing, climbing, watching.

We learned a new song about feeling happy, sad, scared and excited. If you’re scared and you know it, hide your eyes. Kids jumped over the “candlestick” before washing hands for snack.

We finished the day, as always, with Snack, Short Play and Story. We read “The Way Back Home” by Oliver Jeffers. It’s about a boy and a martian who meet on the moon because they both happen to get stuck there. They do some problem solving, and at the end of the story they make their way back to their respective homes. At the end of our school day, kids seemed ready to make their way back to their homes. And so they did :)
