4-Day AM, Junior Kindergarten Teacher
I visited Park West while working as an assistant teacher at a kindergarten/ day-care on the south side, and was struck by the contrast in styles. The adversarial teacher/student relationship I was, at the time, so used to and dissatisfied with was non-existent. I remember sitting in on a "group time," where children were allowed to speak, ask questions, and answer questions. The trust and respect the teachers and students shared for each other was palpable. Needless to say, I came onboard as quickly as possible, and since then it's been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Each day, I get to talk with children; build strong relationships with them, and help them build stronger ones with each other; resolve conflicts; and manage physical obstacles likes stairs, sleeves, and chairs. Seeing their bravery and joy, even when things get confusing or even frightening, is really fulfilling.
