About the Parent Toddler Program
PURPOSE
The Parent/Toddler Class is an opportunity for parent/caregiver and child to explore together. In each class there will be a variety of interesting materials and activities from which to choose. Although there are facilitators in the class, they will not take over directing the children but rather encourage the child’s interest in various materials and activities. Class time will be divided between free-play in the classroom and in the gym. (see schedule)
EXPECTATIONS
For the young child it is normal to play alone, therefore we are not trying to develop a sense of group. Those children who are ready will begin playing with others. Parents should follow their child's interest. Let the child decide which activity s/he would like to get involved in.
Some children may switch from place to place, toy to toy, for the entire class. Some children prefer to stay in the same area and play or observe. Either is developmentally appropriate.
FACILITATORS
Our program is based on supporting the child’s need to explore. The facilitators will plan activities and help shape the environment in order to provide a rich atmosphere in which the children can play and discover. The facilitators are also available as a resource for the children and their parents or care givers.
THE PARENTS
The parental role in our program is vital. Parents are asked to encourage and support the child’s interest in all activities.
Ø let your child guide the choice of activities Ø stay with your child and interact with your child whatever activity s/he may choose Ø sit with your child and participate in group time Ø please ask the facilitators if you have any questions regarding interactions between children or about anything else pertaining to the classroom.
We hope that you and your child will enjoy your time and experiences together at Park West.
SHARING
Sharing is a complicated issue for young children. We do not expect children to share materials or activities while they are using them. Instead, we focus on protecting children’s work and play. Some turn taking may be necessary if many children want to use the same materials.
SNACK
During classroom time children will be offered a simple snack. Parents bring the snack on a rotating basis. The snacks must be in prepackaged form. If it is your snack day and you will not be at school, please call the office and let the secretary know. Please keep the snacks simple and healthy (refer to snack guidelines).
WHAT TO WEAR
Dress children in old and comfortable clothes that can get DIRTY. There will be a variety of messy projects and we want the children to feel comfortable as they explore various materials. Smocks are available in the classrooms.
PARKING AND STROLLERS
Parking is difficult in the Lincoln Park area. There are meters on Lincoln Ave. and on Fullerton west of Orchard. There may be available parking at Children’s Memorial Hospital for a fee. If you walk over with a stroller, you are welcome to leave it in the vestibule folded and away from the handicapped elevator and ramp.
Please use the Park West entrance ONLY! Facilitators will be at the door at arrival to greet parents and students from 9:25 to 9:40am. Our doors will then be locked, so you will need to use the Park West intercom system next to the northernmost doorway after 9:40am. (Please make every effort to arrive on time. It is disruptive to the office to have to make several trips to the door after 9:40am. Thank you.)
SCHEDULE
We hope you and your child enjoy the class. If you have any questions about the toddler class or the nursery school, feel free to stop by the office.
